What is Value Education and Why is it so Important in Today’s Society

value education

Evolving technology, competition and constant change are the pillars that define our world today. In all this academic learning will fall short without the wisdom to utilize them right. When we say ‘right’, Value Education is what constitutes that term in an experiential learning space. After all, books and lesson plans cannot help students build character, make meaningful choices and grow up as responsible and empathetic citizens. There is ‘more’ that is needed to round it all off.

When we include values such as empathy, honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion and integrity in the learning process, it forms the core of Value Education. It is these values that guide behaviour, shape identities and lay the foundation of how we treat each other and ourselves. In short, Value Education includes emotional growth, moral clarity and the core ability to differentiate right from wrong.

In an unforgiving world of the future, our children will have to navigate situations that are vastly different from the generations before them. Without the moral compass of value education, that is not only going to be harsh but at times impossible. It is these intrinsic values that will define the future citizens of the world. Here is why the need for value education is ever so important today:

  • Fast changing world

Information overload, social pressures and digital influence is much harder to navigate than before. Values act as anchors that help them stay grounded and make thoughtful choices.

  • Behavioural challenges

With rising anxiety, competition, and screen time, children need emotional literacy, empathy, and resilience to thrive.

  • Success needs more than intelligence

Soft skills are no longer bylines in the world beyond classrooms and homes. The workplace has evolved to value teamwork, leadership qualities, self-management and integrity.

Value education in human values focuses on:

  • Respect for self and others
  • Responsibility and accountability
  • Care for the community and environment
  • Honesty and fairness
  • Kindness and empathy
  • Tolerance and acceptance of diversity
  • Gratitude and humility

These are the value systems that lay the foundation of healthy relationships, peaceful societies and leadership grounded in ethics.

The formative years of children are spent in the school system and it is for this reason that schools need to include these value systems in their curricular experience. Classroom discussions, teamwork activities, storytelling and real-world experiences go a long way in imparting value education, rather than through mere lessons from textbooks.

Some key benefits include:

  • Stronger emotional intelligence
  • Better peer relationships and reduced bullying
  • Improved focus, discipline, and academic motivation
  • Sense of social responsibility and global citizenship
  • Clear decision-making and moral reasoning

It has been noted that a value-driven individual:

  • Thinks before acting
  • Treats others with dignity
  • Shows resilience in challenges
  • Makes ethical decisions even when no one is watching

A world built on empathy and integrity and supported by talent and everyday habits such as kindness, responsibility and respect form the pillars of society; is the future that value education aims to create. This is not a utopic world, that seems like a figment of imagination, but one that is possible to build; one child at a time.

In today’s evolving world, value education is not optional; it is essential. Attributes that may have been taken for granted help children know who they are, the moral code they need to live by and how they can contribute to the world without trampling those around them.

Schools like the Premia Academy have a huge impact on how these values are imparted to children. They need to be lived, modelled and experienced. Families and communities too play a significant role in working with children to nurture their sense of purpose, compassion and character.
