Road  Safety Rules to Stay Safe

students learning road safety rules with traffic signals

As children step out of home for school, sports activities, and fun with friends, they either walk, cycle or take the bus. Especially when by themselves. It is imperative that they are made aware of the basic road safety rules to keep them safe. Awareness, after all, is the first step towards being safe. Always.

Roads are shared spaces. Cars, bikes, buses, pedestrians, and cyclists all move together, which is why understanding road safety and traffic rules is not just important; it is essential. For students, these rules are not about restriction. They are simple habits that protect you and help everyone stay safe. According to the Road Safety Education Guidance study, children are among the most vulnerable road users and need to be actively taught safe road behaviour.

Here are a few safety rules on the road that every child should know and follow:

1. Always use the footpath

One of the most important traffic rules for students is to always walk on the footpath.

The footpath is meant for pedestrians and keeps you away from moving vehicles. If there is no footpath, walk on the extreme side of the road and stay alert.

2. Cross only at zebra crossings

Never cross the road from the middle or by running between vehicles.

Use:

  • zebra crossings
  • pedestrian signals
  • foot overbridges
  • subways

These spaces are designed to help people cross safely.

3. Look right, left, and right again

It may sound like a game, but checking both sides of the road before you cross is the best safety measure you need to know.

Stop → Look right → Look left → Look right again → Cross

4. Never use your phone while crossing the road

This is especially important for older students who are allowed to use mobile phones. They need to avoid:

  • looking at the phone
  • texting
  • watching videos
  • wearing earphones at high volume

The road and the traffic therein need your full attention.

5. Follow traffic signals

Understanding traffic lights is one of the key safety and traffic rules every student must know.

  • Red = Stop
  • Yellow = Wait / Get ready
  • Green = Go

6. Use the seat belt or school bus safety belt

If you travel by car or school bus, always buckle up. It is not merely a decorative item in the vehicle; seat belts reduce the risk of serious injury during sudden braking or accidents:

  • Stay seated
  • Do not stand near the door
  • Never lean out of the window

7. Wait for the bus to stop completely

One of the most overlooked road safety and traffic rules for students is bus-stop discipline.

Never run toward or get off or onto a moving bus. Wait until:

  • The bus stops fully
  • The door opens
  • The teacher/attendant guides you

8. Wear a helmet while cycling

If you cycle to school or around your neighbourhood, always wear a helmet.

Remember:

  • Use the cycle lane where available
  • Do not ride too fast
  • Keep both hands on the handle
  • Avoid stunts on roads

9. Never run across the road

Children often rush, especially near school gates. But running across the road is dangerous because drivers may not be able to stop in time.

Always walk calmly and cross only when it is safe.

10. Stay visible, especially in rain or low light

During early mornings, evenings, or rainy weather, visibility is lower.

Wear:

  • bright colours
  • reflective school bags
  • light-coloured jackets

This helps drivers notice you easily.

Why road safety rules matter for students

Learning road safety rules for students is about building awareness and responsibility from a young age. These simple habits protect not just you, but everyone on the road.

For safe schools, neighbourhoods and cities, it is the students who need to be introduced to road safety rules from an early age. It goes without saying that the best road safety rules are the ones that become habits.

Stop. Look. Think. Then move.

Because every safe journey begins with one good decision.
